Bengali · Numbers & Time
chhoy
Six
The number six; Bengal famously has six seasons.
আমি সকাল ছয়টায় উঠি।
I get up at six in the morning.
Originating from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ṣha, the word 'ছয়' (chhoy) evolved while retaining its numerical function. Similar forms exist in other languages within the Indo-European family.
'ছয়' is employed equally in spoken and written Bengali, suitable for both formal and informal settings, and recognized by speakers across Bangladesh and West Bengal.
