Calligraphy / The way of writing
The art of beautiful handwriting using a brush and ink. Calligraphy is practised in schools and as a traditional art form throughout Japan.
書道の授業では筆で漢字を書きます。
In calligraphy class we write kanji with a brush.
'書道' (shodou) translates to 'the way of writing,' combining '書' (sho, meaning 'writing') and '道' (dou, meaning 'way'). This practice was influenced by Chinese calligraphy and has evolved uniquely in Japan.
'書道' is predominantly used in formal contexts and is associated with traditional arts and educational settings, appearing in both spoken and written forms.
