Wedding
Marriage — days of music, mehndi, bhangra and feasting.
ਅਗਲੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਵੀਰ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੈ।
Next month is my brother's wedding.
The word 'ਵਿਆਹ' (viah) is derived from the Sanskrit term 'विवाह' (vivāha), which historically referred to the act of marrying and has maintained this meaning through various Indo-Aryan languages. Over time, it has been adopted into Punjabi, retaining its significance related to matrimonial unions.
'ਵਿਆਹ' is commonly used in both spoken and written Punjabi, often in informal contexts such as conversations among family and friends, as well as formal contexts like wedding invitations and announcements. It is prevalent across regions where Punjabi is spoken, including Punjab in India and Pakistan.
The concept of 'ਵਿਆਹ' has been prominent in Punjabi folklore and songs, with references in the work of many poets, including the famous Punjabi poet Bulleh Shah.
